wanderlust wednesday 010

did you miss last weeks post? or maybe you'd like to start from the beginning?

october 30, 2009

this afternoon we went to litchfield national park to check out the sights. seen some crazy huge termite nests, like over ten feet tall! then we went to florence falls to go swimming. beautiful area, the fish swam with you! i jumped off one of the cliff faces into the water, around 35 feet high! then went for a walk to the rock pools to swim in. then after doing some 4x4ing and almost getting stuck with a broken down truck after seeing the lost city, we went home and had some supper! later cait and i decorated our halloween costumes: super hoopers and poi boy! we thought about going out but eventually decided against it as we were getting up early to go fishing with scott in the bay.

october 31, 2009

was a hot day for fishing! got a little burn on my back. we cast out crab cages but didn't catch any. ryan and scott fished all day but only caught a cat fish. no barra! later in the afternoon we went home and painted ryan's costume up for the night. we got all dressed, had some dinner and drinks then headed to brownsmart theatre for the halloween fundraiser for a little girl from darwin with a brain tumour. they had lots of local bands and even people dressed up haha. met up with alex, one of the drummers from emdee, then watched his band play for a bit. we met some other people and ended up going with them to play pool at the after party. we were telling alex how we were contemplating staying in darwin to watch josh pyke (chimney's afire) on tuesday, turns out he's playing with him! so we'll be going to that on tuesday!

november 1, 2009

that morning we got up late and met up with alex, lukas and solena at this asian restaurant called tasty house. had some lunchskies there then all went for coffee and a very long bullshit on the patio. it was about 4:00pm before we left the place and we headed back to lukas's for a jam session. busted out the bongo drums, guitar, and ukulele. then decided we'd check out the outdoor cinema! was very cool, all those badass banana deck chairs and lebanese food haha. we watched a movie called van diemen's land. it was about these tasmanian convicts that escaped into the wild and ended up eating each other . . . then after we went to monsoons and watched a cover band for a while, did some dancing, drank some delicious sparkling wine. the lead singer of the band, dr. elephant, was apparently on that show "the biggest loser." interesting little fact.

did you miss the last post? or would you prefer to start at the beginning?

looking back on things now and remembering how big of a stick in the mud ryan was about dressing up for halloween, totally irritates me. i'm gonna be honest with you, more honest than this journal is - probably for fear of ryan reading it! - but he was a huge party pooper, all the time. sometimes it seriously felt like pulling teeth trying to get him into the spirit of doing things.

october 27, 2009

that early afternoon scott invited us to his work (the airport fire station) for a tour! when we got there we checked in, got passes, and scott showed us all the different rooms in the place (dorms, control centre, mess area, gym, hose and equipment maintenance) then we got to check out the huge aviation fire trucks. cait and i got to try on fireman pants and the helmets. then scott took us for a rip in a truck and showed us the huge cannon water sprayer. then later after being escorted out and thanking scott, we checked out spotlight, the art store, and then headed to the beach for a bit. back at home esther and scott got ready for their dinner date and we ordered pizza! we had some din din and watched ian while charlie was in bed and watched some "how i met your mother." this road is bumpy!

october 28, 2009

costume day! the three of us headed to the mall in search of halloween costumes. cait and i got tutus and capes and an all out superhero costume. ry got an all blue superhero get up. after we went to the wharf for lunch, got some fish and chips, and seen a poor little one legged seagull. we called him stubs. after that it was hot as hell so we went to this free waterslide park. it was awesome! really well kept and cool rides and stuff to play on. that evening after cait had put her hoop together, she taped it up and got it looking snazzy. we all tried on our costumes and we look sick! just have to paint on some super hero logos! we are going to be "super hoopers!" ryan's still not sure.

october 29, 2009

that early morning.. or no, afternoon, we went downtown to cruise around. i need to buy a new mac cord because mine quit charging the computer. then we grabbed a coffee and ripped back to the house for an eske and drinks for the market that night. then we went to this fish feeding thing and got to throw bread in water for all these fishies. it was kinda cool. after that we went to the market and chilled out in the shade and hooped for a while before grabbing some food. then with our wine and beer in the eske, we found a spot on the beach to watch the sunset. afterwards we ate and drank and hooped for a while and then we went to check out emdee's first evening set. a girl swinging fire poi danced with us for a while and then we watched some great fireworks! after we went back for their last set, hooped the whole thing, made $7 haha. met the drummer and were invited to come to their halloween thing tomorrow! or the next day rather!

wanderlust wednesday is a post series devoted to sharing - with humility - the private pages of my travel journals from adventures past. the book you just read from was written during a year long trip to australia (and tasmania) in the year 2009 when i was twenty years old.

did you catch the last post? or would you like to start from the beginning?

i don't know if you or anyone you've ever known has gotten that skin infection called tine versicolor? it actually looks similar to vitiligo but is just a fungal infection caused by a type of yeast that naturally lives on our skin. anyways, you can get it when you live in a hot climate, or sweat a lot, or if you have oily skin or a weakened immune system you can be prone to it. and so poor cait got it on her shoulders and chest while we were on our trip and she ended up being advised by a doctor to smother her skin in dandruff shampoo and leave it on over night. well, she ended up doing it and the poor girl woke up with chemical burns!! isn't that the craziest thing you've ever heard? damn kook doctor!

october 24th 2009

in the morning we all got ready for the "under 350 or under water" action day for climate control. i had applied to photograph the event back home and found my application was accepted shortly before leaving, so i was excited to be a volunteer photographer. something like 170ish countries were all involved all around the world with around 7000 events. ours went really great, held at the jingli water gardens, we made a human tide line on the bridge that runs over top of trower road, representing the sea level we may face if the ice caps continue to melt due to our failing ozone layer being about 350 ppm. i think it's around 390 ppm now. anyway, laster that afternoon we went fishing with scott and i caught a barramundi fish!! but i felt bad so i threw it back. then later that night we went out for a bit, checked out darwin night life after supper. cait and i shared a fishbowl drink, we tried to get into the strippers but no luck, ryan wasn't within dress code. how dare he wear sandals when it's plus 30 out at night, like really.

october 25, 2009

we checked out the mall after sleeping in until eleven. took a look around, found out that men's haircuts are more expensive on sundays. later we ripped home and hung out in the head and ac. ryan and cait swam in the spa and i worked on some photos. then we got an eske together, some beet + wine and headed to the beach to watch the sunset. this time esther came too. cait and i headed off in search of food at the market after we got a spot on the beach. came back with some squid, rice and calamari. had some drinks, then did some walking around the market. it was so good, i found danny an awesome shark tooth necklace that he can take on and off, haha. then watched a sweet drum and didge band. i bought a set of poi before we left and then we all did some practicing back home in the yard!

october 26, 2009

a very productive day indeed! went and got oil for the car, a new tire, cait some hoop making materials, ry got a haircut and i went to the walk in to ask about my numb toes., apparently it could have something to do with my chronic back pain, but not much they can do about it unless i was to get a CT scan. then we got our swimming shit together and went down to the beach. it was pretty nice down there, with a nice big net to keep the jelly fish out haha. laid on the grass and texted dan, worked on my tan, then we ripped back home and made sure we weren't watching the kids, but we weren't (we'd do that the next day!) that night i read module 6 of my photography course and ry and cait watched some "how i met you're mother". also, cait smurf suited up to try and get rid of her sun fungus with selsun blue! we'll see if it works!

did you miss last weeks post?.. maybe you'd like to read from the beginning...

october 21, 2009

during my hoop and run amid the many termite nests i noticed canine footprints on my trail. on the way back i saw a small dog running ahead of me and watched him run around the front of the tent. when i got there he was already gone, disappearing into the grass... odd.
lots of driving to do and we started early, reaching devil's marbles around lunch. it started raining, and then thundering and lightening as we were climbing around on the rock formations. such a cool down pour in the plus 35 - 40 degree weather.. hippy showers. later we stopped in wycliffe well, the supposed ufo capital of australia. nothing impressive, it was a joke. as we were leaving though some monster %$#ing bad ass bug bit me through my shirt on my lower back, and yeah, i cried. later on we parked somewhere for the night and drank a litre of milk cuz our fridge quit on us. seen a huge huntsman spider right before bed... comforting.

october 22, 2009

up stupidly early so went for a good long run/hoop mesh. had some bacon and eggs. ate the last of our snags, finally. i don't know if i'll ever be able to eat them again. lots of driving again, lots of nothing but desert. we did make it to the free zoo and pub just as i finished my book (john lennon: the life) %$#ing hell that's a good read. must remember to email the author. anyway we had a beer at the pub and got back on track, made it to these "thermal pools." it was effing hot, but the spring was pretty good for cooling us down. it was tucked away in this jungly area surrounded by palm trees filled with flying fox bats. like literally over 100,000 of the things. they were actually really cute. so after we showered and got gas, chatted with this canadian chick (a 7 year shambhala veteran), found a pull out and made supper, watched some "how i met your mother" on my mac.

october 23, 2009

shit work out in the am, no where to run practically. people everywhere. have to make up for it tomorrow. we hit katherine after breakfast and packing up, got some ice coffees and then eager to finish off the last 300 some km to darwin we got back on the road. hard to believe we've done over 4000km already! so we rolled into darwin and met up with ryan's uncle scott. he showed us to his house and then gave us a grand tour of the city. the place is beautiful with lots to do! the weather is hot and humid +30s all day. later we met scott's german wife esther (coolest lady ever) and had a big bbq at their house. we met their kids, charlie (4) and ian (6), so cute! and sat around that night and visited over some wine and beer.

. . .

so about the snags.
before i arrived in australia, caitlyn had been there working for several months in a sausage factory. with this position she was able to get a nice big discount on any meat she'd like to buy straight from the factory. so we ended up buying like 2 or 3 boxes of these little sausages, aka snags. we literally ate them for almost every meal, breakfast, lunch dinner.. sautéed, bbq'd, cold leftovers, chopped up and put into pasta or casseroles, pretty much any way you could eat them, we ate them that way. and while they were delicious, by the end of the last box we were completely sick of them.

the monkman trail hike // SPRING HOLIDAYS

last wednesday danny and i decided to hike the monkman trail just south of tumbler ridge and spend a couple nights in the woods. we were lucky enough to have my mother in law available to watch sawyer the thursday night and then we arranged a sleepover friday night at nikky and matt's (danny's cousin) and sawyer got to play with his little second cousin eli all day - thank you guys! so we had three days and two nights to make use of and we wanted to see as much of the hike as possible and maximize our total relaxation time as well. so we meticulously packed our bags and gear keeping them as light as was possible, rationed our food, grabbed the dogs and set off thursday morning at about 6:00am. the weather had been calling for rain in tumbler ridge for the last few days but we didn't care, we were prepped for wetness and pumped nonetheless.

in tumbler ridge we stopped and asked a local which road would take us to the monkman park and she had mentioned they'd had a few bear sightings this past weekend and encouraged us to bring some bear protection like a bear bell, to which we replied, oh yes we've brought our bear bell - and it's a doozy, loudest bear bell you can buy! so as we were driving into the park, lo and behold, we spot a black bear in the ditch, and not gonna lie, that made me feel a wee bit uneasy. especially once we got on the trail and saw plenty of bear droppings and dug up mossy earth. but seriously, what's a wild mountain adventure without a little risk of animal encounter?

our first stop was the murray river camp at about km 7, just after the cable bridge. dex was definitely not crazy about crossing the river. the mesh metal walkway was a bit tough on her ol' paws, but she slowly but surely made it across the water. we stopped just long enough to have a snack and then got back on the trail. up to this point we'd been walking along the murray river through a thick forest and a rooty trail, hopping over plenty of fallen trees (this killed us on our way out, hooey). after km 7 the trail began to incline up the mountain and the scenery turned rocky and rugged. it was really cool to see how the longer we walked the more our surroundings changed, and every half dozen kms we would see new plants, new rocks and different colours, and we'd be in a totally different scene than we'd been in the previous hour or so.

we'd started hiking at about 10:00am and by 4:00pm we'd reached camp trot at about km 14 and where we would enjoy our first coffee and baileys of the trip.. sooooooo good. at this point we were at a bit of a crossroads: do we stop and make camp, or do we head on to camp cascade at km 22.5? being as there wasn't much to see at camp trot and that we still felt like we had some more walking in us, we decided to commit to making it to cascade and we got back on the trail once more. we trekked full steam ahead hiking up and down, up and down through the mossy or rocky woods, and finally arrived at cascade after a steep descent down a jagged rocky staircase pathway at about 7:00pm. here is where we would set up camp right across from a two-tiered waterfall and stay for the next two nights. we got a few tarps strung up just in time over top of our tent and then we enjoyed watching a thunder and lightening show from the warmth and dryness of our tent.

in the morning we enjoyed our breakfast of mr. noodles and eggs and walked up the river a ways to try some fishing from the shore - no luck. there was another waterfall directly across from us here and a third one down to the right of camp that we later walked to see. the rest of the day was spent recovering and relaxing, dan napping, me yoga-ing, stoking the fire and sipping on southern comfort, stringing up tarps and widdling my walking stick. it was a relaxing and restful day! we knew we'd need it for the big day hiking out the next morning.

we were packed up and on the trail by 6:00am and began the long walk down the mountain and back to the jeep. when we were packing up our bags and gear at home we rationed our food very carefully (stingily) to keep them as light as possible but still keep us fed properly. well we both agreed we probably could have brought a few more protein bars along, because by the time we were halfway out we were feeling malnourished, and we had the only fast food restaurant in tumbler ridge on the mind: subway. the whole walk out i was day dreaming of warm chicken noodle soup and white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, mmmm. so we slam the 23 kms out in seven hours flat, only taking short mini breaks along the way, feet aching and achilles killing. we get to the jeep, stinky and sweaty, and start the drive back to town.

you know when you're so hungry that you get a little irritated? little upset? or in other words, hangry? well we got to subway and were officially grumpy bastards and it just so happen our customer service experience left a lot to be desired. we're talking soup in a bag, not in the bowl, splooges of mayo and a less than clean and tidy worker on the sandwich line wiping her nose all over arm. so not an experience that would normally get to me, but on this occasion, patience was running low, haha. but lets not rehash old news, we got our food, still tasted like heaven, and we got back on the road and headed home. after picking up some booster juices and epsom salts, we grabbed our little munchkin from grandmas and spent the rest of the evening limping around the house and enjoying being clean and dry and triumphant! it was an awesome time and would definitely do it again!
